Attractions

Sun Valley Motel offers you a perfect place to stay and explore the local attractions. Wellsford is the northern most major settlement in the Auckland Region located at the junction of State Highway 1 and 16, 114 kilometers north of Auckland City. It is almost exactly halfway between Auckland and the northern city of Whangarei - the next notable regional center.

The Albertland Museum is directly across the road from us. It is the heritage centre of the district which houses extensive records, memorabilia, artifacts and other items relating to the arrival of the Albertlanders in the 1860's.

A short two minute walk will bring you to the local shops, cafes and restaurants. The Wellsford Golf Club is only a few minutes away - the course is open 7 days a week. There are carts and clubs available for hire and visitors are welcome to use the club's facilities after their game including the well appointed bar and excellent food.

Matakana offers its farmers markets, boutique shops, cinema and Morris and James' unique pottery and tile works. The area is also home to a number of wineries and restaurants. Once you have sampled Matakana you could either take the ferry from Sandspit to see Mansion House on Kawau Island or continue around the coast to Leigh and the Goat Island Marine reserve for diving or snorkeling. The same road takes you on to Pakiri where you can choose to go horse riding on the beach, do some fishing or just soak up the sun and cool off in the water. The road from Pakiri will lead you back to Wellsford or you can take another short detour to visit the Lakes at Tomarata situated approx 20 kilometers northeast of Wellsford. The lake offers a safe fenced section near the shore for your young children to swim in. You will also find a changing shed, toilets, barbecue, picnic tables and a boat ramp for water skiers.

"Magical Mangawhai" is only 27 kilometres from Wellsford, boasting five beaches within 15 minutes of each other and plenty of local shops, offering a wide variety of local merchandise.

Only five minutes north of Wellsford you will come to Te Hana. On one side of the road is The Arts Factory, a studio full of large and interesting carvings by Kerry Strongman and on the other side of the road is the Maori Cultural Center, offering a number of authentic Maori experiences.
